Scholarship Opportunities for Chuukese Students

CRM provides this partial list of available scholarships and links to their websites as a way to encourage Chuukese students to pursue their undergraduate and graduate-level degrees. FSM-based Scholarships

FSM Financial Assistance
March, 2009: The FSM National Department of Education announced the availability of competitive scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students attending any accredited institutions of higher education both locally and overseas. For application and other resources visit the FSM DOE website.

Supplemental Education Grant (SEG)
The SEG scholarship is specifically for FSMers who are enrolled in a masters or doctoral degree program in the field of education.

Sin Tax Scholarship
This scholarship is also for gaduate and postgraduate students only. Award is annual and amount is dependent on cost of attendance and funds availability.

FSM Development Bank (FSMDB)
FSMDB offers scholarships to FSMers pursuing graduate and postgraduate (undergraduates may be considered) in the fields of accounting, finance, banking, business, economics, computer information systems, and other related fields.

Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC)
To help in the development of FSM, the Australian Embassy in Pohnpei offers short and long-term scholarships to FSMers to study at a number of the APTC campuses throughout the Pacific  to pursue various fields of studies such as tourism and hospitality, automotives, manufactoring, health and community service, eletrical and constructions.

Chinese Embassy Scholarship
To assist in the development needs of FSM, the Chinese Embassy in Pohnpei offers scholarships to FSMers to study in colleges and universities in China. FSM Embassy encourages all FSM students to take advantage of the scholarship opportunity and contact the Department of Foreign Affairs at (691) 320-2613 or the Chinese Embassy in Palikir at 320-5575 for additional information.

New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS)
Added March 16, 2009. The NZDS scholarships enable students from FSM and other selected developing countries to study in colleges in New Zealand. Students may study development-related fields in education, health, rural livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development, depending on the human resource development training needs of the home government.

US-based Scholarships

Pacific Islanders in Communication (PIC)
The PIC scholarship ($5,000) is awarded to qualified Pacific island students pursuing degrees or certifications in media /communications ranging from print, film, radio, electronic. This is to further the organization’s mission to support, advance, and develop Pacific Island media content and talent that results in a deeper understanding of Pacific Island history, culture, and contemporary challenges.

Pell Grant
Funded by the U.S. federal government, the Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain postbaccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Practically all Chuukese college students qualify for this free money for college.

Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)
Funded by the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation and administered by the Asia & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APISF), GMS is a highly competitive scholarship that pays for up to 5 years of undergraduate studies in any field and graduate studies in specific fields.

Hawai’i Community Foundation
Hawai’i Community Foundation’s scholarship program consists of over 150 different scholarship funds established by generous individuals, businesses or organizations to assist Hawai’i's residents in obtaining a college education. This is especially good for the Chuukese students residing in Hawai’i.

Asian American Journalists Association
Although AAJA scholarships (ranging from $1,000 to $5,000) are given to aspiring Asian American student-journalists based on academic excellence, Pacific islanders are also eligible to apply.

Asian Pacific Islander Organization (APIO)
APIO scholarships ($1,000) are for undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in the fields of agriculture, natural resources conservation, computer science, or engineering.

East West Center Scholarships
Hawii-based EWC offers various scholarships and fellowships both short and long term academic scholarships and fellowships as well as educational exchange and professional development programs opportunities.

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants program provides awards to outstanding minority students to encourage their selection of accounting as a major and their ultimate entry into the profession.

George Choy Memorial / Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA)
GAPA scholarships ($1,000) are for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (l/g/b/t) Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) who are in the process of applying to, or are currently attending, a post-secondary institution.

Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA)
This is for those who live in the Orange County (Southern California) area. The OCAPICA / United Way AAPI Scholarship Fund offers scholarships ($1,000) to Asian American & Pacific Islander high school and college students who demonstrate significant merit in academics, workplace, and/or community involvement.

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL)
PREL offers the Pacific Teacher Scholarship ($750- $1,000) for students enrolled in a teacher preparation program.

Pan-Pacific Surgical Association
The Pan-Pacific Surgical Association awards scholarships ($1,000) to deserving Pacific Island medical students who plan to return to their home countries to practice medicine.

Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association Community Education Foundatio (APAPCEF)
APAPACEF scholarships ($1,000) are for undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrate the commitment to support and advance the awareness of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) issues through education and outreach.

Habele Outer Island Education Fund
Habele is a scholarship granting organization. By helping exceptional children to attend prestigious private schools in the district capitals, Habele aim to empower individuals as well as strengthen community perceptions about the role and value of formal education.

Rotary International
The Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.

Asian Pacific American Librarians Association Scholarship
APALA scholarships are for students seeking a master’s or doctoral degree program in library and/or information science at a library school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation
To help students who would otherwise find attending college to be a significant financial burden due to the loss of a parent to breast cancer.

California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness Program (CANFit)
You would qualify for CANFit scholarships if have financial needs, live and pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in the fields of nutrition, physical education or culinary arts in the state of California.

  1. I like the newly-coined word… Echuukated!

    Very Chuukesely orichinal… one more way to Micronesianize the English language and American ideas.

    A good friend at the University of Michigan, Vince Diaz, producer of documentaries like “Sacred Vessels: Navigating Tradition and Identity in Micronesia,” once said in one of his articles that the U.S. not only colonized Micronesia but Micronesians also Micronesianized American products and ideas. Thus, they created a rather mutual relationship, you might say.

    Such is with “Get Echuukated!”
